African Giant Black's (AGB's) are considered the "Holy Grail" of millipedes. This is basically because of their size and their limited availability in the United States. The AGB's can reach a length of 12" plus. Their color is black and they have a reddish-brown color inside their segments. Their lifespan is anywhere from 7-10 years. They are very docile creatures and will only show a defensive mode when threatend. Their defensive mode as with most millipedes is to secrete a substace that will stain your hands or fingers for a few days. If you are a highly allergic person you might have a reaction to the chemical.
Female - $65.00 ea.
Male - $85.00 ea.
Thai Rainbow millipedes are beautiful in color. I like to say "What they lack in size they more than make up for in their color." Their color ranges from shades of blue's to pink's to grey's. They can reach a length of a little over 5" with a narrow body. As their name implies they come from Thailand.
These flat millipedes are from the family, Polydesmida. I believe there is some confusion regarding this species as they are referred to with a couple of different names. I have seen both Rhododesmus mastophorus mastophorus and Ceratodesmus cristatus. Either way they are very cool looking millipedes. This specific species comes from Tanzania in areas with grasslands and dry savannahs with sandy soils. Their length is about 1.5" - 2".
Flame leg millipedes are another species that does not have great size, but has spectacular color. With a mahogony body and legs that are yellow and orange they are quite an impressive millipede. These millipedes come from the Philippines. These millipedes can attain a size of about 5-6".
Sky Blue millipedes are from the Philippines. They are a larger, fuller bodied millipede and have beautiful coloring, which is what a lot of people look for in millipedes. They can average 8-9" when full grown. Their bodies are sky blue and grey.
The Philippine Brown millipede is a millipede that has impressive size. It comes close to the AGB, but falls a little short with a size of about 8-10".
Red Banded millipedes are another interesting and colorful species. Their bodies are red and black and their legs are dark red. They reach a length of 6-7" and have a heavier, thicker body.
There are a number of different species of Desert millipedes. The species shown here is the Sonoran Desert millipede. This is a medium sized species (4-6") that is reddish-brown in color. As with all other millipedes they are very docile.
The Florida Ivory is a colorful millipede from Florida and other regions of the Southeast.
